Historically, Chinese stationery was known as Four Treasures (that is brush; paper; ink; and ink-stone). Couple thousands years ago, education was only for the rich who could afford their children to learn read and write with brushes. When a person had mastered the technique of the brush strokes, he proved that he could earn a living and had a certain status in society.
