The pagoda (literally “relic “preserver) is a several-tiered tower which was assumed to represent those burial or cremational sites where the Buddha’s ashes were traditionally preserved. They have also been erected in commemoration of particular acts of piety. As such, they are powerful symbols of purity and protection. They are also symbols of wisdom and understanding, having been the most efficient designs (in terms of both space and peace!) for studying and preserving books or scrolls.
