Chinese ink in the past is a stick form and made of carbon from plants and mixed with glue.  You need to grind it with small amount of water for at least 20minutes(or longer) to get a reasonable thick black liquid.
Liquid ink in bottle(comes in various different tone) is a convenient option (a fairly popular choices for the modern artists in general.)
